I met for coffee with one of my friends who does lots of creative work in the area of social engagement. We talked about my photography work from Rome and Milan Italy in 2004. I told him that some of my best photography work is, as he put it “socially engaged” photography. That is to say, I feel like I am doing my best visual and conceptual work when I begin to use my camera to represent the social conscious I carry in my brain and heart. Anyway, I went through my old portfolio this morning and scanned some of my favorite portraits from the people I photographed in Italy for three weeks during the summer of 2004 when I was a sophomore at the University of Kansas, majoring in photography.
